Safety Operation Procedures for Punch Presses

April 18, 2026

A punch press is a mechanical device that uses pressure to process metallic or non-metallic materials into desired shapes and sizes, and is widely used in the manufacturing industry. The safety operation procedures for punch presses refer to a set of safety technical requirements and operating methods to be followed during punch press operation, aiming to protect the safety of operators, equipment and products, and prevent accidents and losses.

The safety operation procedures for punch presses mainly cover the following aspects:

Operator Qualifications and Training

Operators shall possess corresponding professional knowledge and skills, be familiar with the structure, performance, working principles, operation procedures and maintenance methods of punch presses, and be allowed to operate independently only after passing training and assessment. Operators shall participate in safety education and training on a regular basis to enhance safety awareness and skills.

Equipment Inspection and Maintenance

Before operation, a comprehensive inspection of the punch press shall be conducted, covering electrical, mechanical, lubrication and protection systems. The machine may only be started after confirming no abnormalities. During operation, routine maintenance such as cleaning, lubrication, adjustment and fastening shall be performed regularly, and faults shall be eliminated in a timely manner. After shutdown, the power supply shall be cut off, the equipment and workplace shall be cleaned, and records and handover shall be properly completed.

Die Installation and Adjustment

When installing a die, the power supply shall be turned off first, the slide shall be stopped at the bottom dead center, and then installation and adjustment shall be carried out in accordance with the die manual or drawings. The die shall be firmly fixed on the worktable, with the upper and lower dies properly aligned and an appropriate closing height that shall not exceed the rated pressure. After installation, test stamping shall be performed manually or in inching mode to verify normal operation of the die without jamming, collision, cracks or other defects. When disassembling the die, the power supply shall also be turned off first, the slide shall be stopped at the bottom dead center, and disassembly shall be performed in reverse order.

Control and Operation During Stamping

The following requirements shall be strictly observed during the stamping process:

  • Simultaneous operation of one punch press by two or more persons is generally prohibited. If necessary, one person shall be in charge of command and control of the foot pedal or handle.
  • Before stamping, workpieces or blanks shall be inspected for compliance, free from interlayers, overlapping, contamination and other defects. Special tools or robotic arms shall be used for feeding or unloading; hands shall not be directly extended into the die area or touch moving parts.
  • During stamping, attention shall be paid to the operation of the punch, slide, flywheel and other components. In case of abnormal noise, vibration, temperature rise or other anomalies, the machine shall be stopped immediately for inspection. Immediate shutdown is also required for material jamming or breakage.
  • Stamping speed and rhythm shall be properly controlled to avoid quality problems or accidents caused by excessively fast or slow operation. Speed adjustment or switching between single-stroke and continuous modes shall only be performed after shutdown.
  • Good ventilation and lighting shall be maintained during stamping to avoid adverse effects of high temperature, high humidity and strong light on eyesight and health. Dust, oil mist and other pollutants shall be cleaned up in a timely manner or protective equipment shall be used.

Safety Protection and Emergency Handling

The following safety protection and emergency handling measures shall be implemented during punch press operation:

  • Operators shall properly wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, masks and safety shoes. Excessively long or loose clothing and accessories are prohibited to prevent entanglement or scratches.
  • Punch presses shall be equipped with complete safety protection devices such as protective guards, emergency stop buttons, limit switches and interlocking devices, which shall not be removed or damaged. Operators shall be familiar with the locations and functions of these devices and activate or shut them down promptly in case of emergencies.
  • Punch presses shall be equipped with reliable grounding wires to prevent electric leakage or electric shock. Smoking and the use of flammable and explosive materials on or near the punch press are prohibited to prevent fires or explosions.
  • Necessary fire-fighting equipment and first-aid supplies such as fire extinguishers, rescue blankets, bandages and disinfectants shall be provided near the punch press. Operators shall master basic fire-fighting and first-aid knowledge, and conduct timely rescue or seek help in case of fire or injury.
